BEING PREGNANT

Image
It is quite overwhelming for most women when they find out they are pregnant! With the aid of the new applications that track women’s menstrual cycle and the new urine pregnancy tests, most women who seek gynaecologic advice are about 6 weeks pregnant. Having the anxious couple in the consultation rooms waiting to see the little growing fetus on ultrasound can be very nerve-wracking for an ob-gyn. We want to see the little gestational sac with a tiny fetal pole showing us a flickering heartbeat. A failing pregnancy with no fetal pole, an empty uterus, or an ectopic pregnancy is certainly not the kind of news I want to give to the expecting mothers. A lot of physical changes happen to the body in the first three months of the pregnancy such as tender breasts and slight weight gain. Fatigue can be so severe that some women can just fall asleep in the middle of the dinner. It is a sign for our pregnant ladies to slow down and take it easy while that little human is growing inside ...

ON FRIENDSHIP

Image
Friendship is a beautiful and important aspect of life! It is a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and support. Good friends are there for each other through thick and thin, offering a listening ear, a comforting word, and a helping hand. Friends share laughter, adventures, and memories, and help shape each other’s lives in meaningful ways. One of the most important characteristics of a friend to me is loyalty and reliability. I often tend to share a lot of personal aspects of my life and I expect honesty and open communication. Friendships can take many forms, from close and intimate to casual and social. I was not a very social child in pre-school and did not make any friends. During grade one I was constantly crying and experienced separation anxiety, I wonder how I actually learned to read, write, and count. By grade three I made two very good friends. I still keep in touch with one of them through Instagram. By grade 6 I met a lovely girl, and our friendship cont...

NHI IN SOUTH AFRICA

Image
I have been working in the South African healthcare system for about 9 years. I started as an intern in Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital, and did one year of community service at Bara Hospital. I was extremely enthusiastic about my South African medical experience and didn’t mind the overcrowded and short-staffed hospital environment. Every day had a new challenge and new experienceS in clinical medicine.  Thelle Mogoerane Hospital was recently renovated and had quite a pleasant environment. The government wanted to start the process of making the hospital services paperless in 2015. They started training the staff and distributing laptops, but it was never implemented. We only had access to X-rays over the PAX computer system. This would make hospital record keeping and access to patient’s old files very easy and we also did not have to struggle with various doctor’s handwriting. My Bara maternity experience was different. The department was extremely rundown and old. Th...
